Although the legislation was originally designed to address gaps that permitted sports wagering businesses to circumvent regulations, the final iteration unintentionally ensnared online poker. Leyonhjelm, a prominent opponent of the ban, contends that it stemmed from legislators misinterpreting the subtleties of online poker, famously remarking, “I don’t believe they grasped the implications of their actions.”

Major participants in the internet gaming industry, such as Vera&John and 888poker, have already withdrawn from the Australian market. PokerStars is preparing to follow suit if the proposed legislation is enacted.
Fredrik Leyonhjelm, a member of the Swedish Parliament, is vocally opposing the measure. He is calling for an inquiry and expressing his support for the Australian Online Poker Alliance (AOPA). This collective of Australian poker enthusiasts is actively resisting the modifications.
The AOPA is endeavoring to mobilize public backing. They have initiated a petition to “Maintain the Legality of Online Poker” and established a platform for Australians to communicate directly with their elected officials regarding the matter.
