Australias media regulator is taking strict action against unlawful international gaming websites. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) recently discovered 15 additional platforms infringing Australian regulations, expanding a list that has surpassed 600 since 2019. These websites, bearing names like “Spin Oasis” and “Ozbet88,” are alleged to be in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001. The ACMA is requesting internet providers to restrict Australian users from accessing these sites.
This measure is part of a broader initiative to safeguard Australians from the dangers of utilizing unregulated gaming platforms. The ACMA cautions that these sites frequently lack crucial consumer safeguards, exposing Australians to the possibility of financial loss. Since the ACMA commenced enforcing more stringent regulations on offshore gambling in 2017, over 180 illicit operators have discontinued providing services within Australia.
The Land Down Under is increasing its endeavors to tackle internet wagering dependency. A nationwide opt-out registry, known as BetStop, is slated to launch shortly. This framework, governed by the ACMA, will allow people to take charge and restrict themselves from internet betting sites. This action follows a legislative investigation into the widespread problem of digital gambling and its consequences for at-risk individuals.
