Martin Dahsel, Chief Executive Officer of Bayesian Esports Solutions, discusses the necessity of adjustment and growth when establishing a new venture after deciding to pause further development of their esports directory.

Bayesian Esports Solutions declared the release of their esports directory product, aiming to streamline the perplexing and challenging tournament schedule. However, the product is now in “low maintenance mode” as the company decided to concentrate its resources elsewhere.

The decision to effectively shelve the product was not straightforward, especially considering it provided iGB readers with an understanding of the diverse esports competitions held during the COVID-19 enforced sports closure. Bayesian CEO Martin Dahsel clarifies why he decided to abandon the project he refers to as “my baby.”

Reflecting on the release of the esports directory, it was described as a means to simplify the tournament calendar, which was often “a chaotic mess.”

Do you believe this aids in defining the extent of services offered?

Indeed, it certainly assists. The worth of the esports directory lies in its capacity to assist us in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of the esports scene. While it has ceased updating for the time being, we will continue to regard it as a valuable asset. We will apply existing technologies to other products to achieve our objective – to elevate the esports data industry to a professional level. However, regarding the esports directory itself, we must investigate novel approaches.

So, what prompted your decision to place it in a low-maintenance state?

We are consistently dedicated to delivering high-quality products and services. However, we are currently unable to address specific issues within the esports directory in the near future. Moreover, we have observed that other business areas are progressing at a more rapid pace. As a resource-constrained startup, we must continuously assess which projects can yield the greatest value for our partners and clients.

This scenario feels analogous to transitioning from B2C to focusing on B2B solutions – how crucial is it to make these choices swiftly, in terms of directional shifts, product efficacy, and product inefficacy?

I believe it is one of the primary factors contributing to a startup’s success. Even for me, making this decision was quite challenging, as the esports directory was my original idea and a component of my vision. However, as a company leader, there are times when you must make difficult choices, and you cannot allow emotional attachments to impede the company’s growth.

Within our industry, it’s been demonstrated that odds services and constituent products are presently vital to our company’s triumph in the BEDEX marketplace.

Conversely, our organization also boasts a multitude of intriguing endeavors that provide opportunities to exhibit its capabilities.

The team wasn’t entirely surprised by this. During our required weekly gatherings, it was evident we weren’t achieving our objectives.

We’ve adopted a comprehensive strategy. In the BEDEX marketplace, we’re providing raw data to anyone who’s interested, while also continuing to offer our own products and services based on that data. If we identify a promising area, we might offer it ourselves. So, I wouldn’t characterize this as a change. Through our collaboration with esports.com, we recognized a need for enhanced tools that present esports in a more conventional sports-like manner.

Will the emphasis transition to extracting value from the data that Bayes can access? With the introduction of the data widgets this week, we might observe this shift.

Have there been any recent enhancements or updates to BEDEX? How is the product performing?

We’re very satisfied with the advancements we’ve implemented in the marketplace. Currently, we have over 40 customers accessing real-time and historical data from BEDEX, and we’ve been diligently working to provide more data and additional features. One illustration is our parser Carp, which was developed in close partnership with ESL. It enables real-time data extraction from games like CS:GO and Dota 2, providing an unparalleled quantity and quality of data points.

Finally, what are your perspectives on the growth of esports during the lockdown?

Theres been a lot of chatter from operators and providers about the flourishing esports scene, but do you believe its upward path is merely being sped up by the suspension of conventional sports, or is there a fresh, unforeseen audience appearing?

Our June earnings were record-shattering. However, I believe that the surge of people into esports during the lockdown was because they had more leisure time at home and were seeking new material to consume.

Therefore, we shouldn’t lose too many of the fans we drew when conventional sports return. Individuals will have less time to dedicate to participating in and watching esports, but once conventional sports resume, interest in esports will go back to its usual growth rate.
